“The events that shape us to be who we are, are the ones that at first glance feel like they might break us.”
I still vividly remember the first time I heard, “You didn’t meet expectations.” It was a harrowing experience because I was completely blindsided. The feedback was, that I had forgotten to include dessert on the menu for an important dinner event. No I was not an event planner, I was an HR Officer.
Part of my role was managing bursary students. This included arranging a formal dinner for the students to meet the executives. To say I was green would be an understatement. So with no direction, handover, or training, I was basically working on vibes and assumptions. Unfortunately, I missed the mark by not ordering dessert. The head of the area who I was told post the disaster of course, had a sweet tooth. They had to scramble for ice cream, and that oversight cost me a bonus and a raise for the year.
The lessons from this experience was:
1.Ask for help, do not assume
2.Learn more about fine dining
3.Make friends with people in catering
All my work dinners since that have been a resounding success, if I do say so myself. I actually enjoy planning events down to the last detail and also being part of the event.
The biggest passion the “No desert dinner” ignited in me was on Performance Management. This made me realized how critical it is to have a proper performance contract, clearly articulated goals, regular feedback, and the courage to ask for help.
Since then, I have embraced every learning opportunity and I’ve dedicated myself to training leaders and employees on effective performance management. I’ve designed programs and conduct regular sessions, supporting both leaders and employees in setting and achieving measurable goals.
Performance management isn’t just about appraisals and bonuses; it’s about ensuring everyone has the tools and support to excel in their roles. When done right, it not only prevents blind spots but also fosters growth and development.
